The Nearness of God

Anyone who lives long in this world will witness the failure of human friendships. Sometimes fast friends transform into fierce foes, or else, they slowly drift away to become mere memories. This loss not only stings emotionally, when fellow Christians are involved, it can do real spiritual harm. We must remember how we are all imperfect and falter in our spirituality. We often need each other’s patience and forgiveness. However, we must also remember the vast difference between the followers of God and God Himself. The Almighty will never forsake us (Deut. 31:6; Psa. 25:1-3; Heb. 13:5). He perfectly exemplifies trustworthiness, and He does not struggle with consistency (Num. 23:19; Jam. 1:17). Have you considered the value of the nearness of God? His proximity can be an asset with far-reaching benefits, providing us a way through tribulation and conflict.

Before the conflict, the nearness of God provides us courage and conviction. We know the Christian life is not always easy. It is essential that our beliefs are firmly held. We know those who undertake godly living shall suffer persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). And God knows us perfectly (Psa. 139:1-4). So, we must be watchful, stand fast in the faith, be brave, and be strong (1 Cor. 16:13). How can we accomplish this? By understanding that God is with us, and He provides all that we need! Let us echo the courage of men like David. The Lord will be with us and deliver us from any enemies which arise (1 Sam. 17:37). Let us have conviction, because, like Moses and Aaron, we have been prepared by God to speak His Word (Ex. 4:12). Today we must acknowledge His presence and study what He has revealed to us. This can provide a check on our inappropriate behavior before it even occurs. His works offer a proven track record of dependability (Psa. 75:1). He is near and His Word is truth (Psa. 119:151). He has prepared and equipped His people to face great challenges (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3-4)!

During the conflict, the nearness of God provides us confidence and comfort. When the child of God feels that a problem is too much to handle, there is an answer close at hand! God is our very present help, aiding us as we call on Him in any trouble (Psa. 46:1; 145:18; 1 Pet. 5:7). As Gideon learned so powerfully, overwhelming numbers and superior physical force can be defeated with God’s backing (Jdg. 7:2ff). And we know Jehovah God will back those who maintain their loyalty to Him (2 Chr. 16:9)!, When Paul was travelling to Rome, the Lord helped him not to lose heart amid the great storm on the Mediterranean (Acts 27:22-25). He said with certainty, “It will be just as God told me!” The Bible gives countless examples of God’s confidence and comfort enabling men and women to stand against evil. And He will do the same for us today (Rom. 8:37-39; 2 Cor. 1:3-5). Therefore, we must resist Satan and submissively draw near to our Maker (Jam. 4:7-8). What a comfort to know that if we align ourselves with His will, God will be for us, and none can oppose us (Rom. 8:31)!
