When someone brings up the three categories of sin, you probably think of “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16). This is a good list, and it helpfully describes areas of temptation and attacks used by our enemy, the devil. However, I once heard a preacher list a different set of three as categories of sin. He referred to them as the three sin styles, three ways to be caught in the devil’s wiles (Eph 6:10). Each sin style presents one way we hurt ourselves with poor choices. Your relationship with the Lord will benefit from careful examination and consideration of this list.
Some people choose the SOCIAL sin style. This category includes wickedness that is done, more or less, in the open. Modern society has labeled certain things as acceptable, or perhaps unavoidable. Immodesty, lying, drinking, gambling, and divorce for any reason would all fit into this category. The world is at peace with these socially acceptable sins. They are past feeling shame; their consciences are not bothered (1 Tim 4:2; Eph 4:19). Sadly, even members of the church have made various arguments in an attempt to defend this wickedness. We need to be aware that acceptance by a society or government does not equal acceptance by God! We will have to give answer for these transgressions (2 Cor 5:9-10). The Bible still teaches that those living in sin cannot inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor 6:9-11). Don’t let the social sin style pull you away from God and His will for you.
Some people choose the SECRET sin style. This category includes wickedness that is done, more or less, behind closed doors. In today’s world many fool themselves, thinking their sin will never be found out (Numbers 32:23). They are like the Pharisees, taking pride in an outward appearance of holy living, while inwardly concealing great evil (Matt 23:27). You can convince a lot of people, but you will not fool the Lord. Our God sees all (Psa 139:1-12; Prov 15:3). In fact, the New Testament describes how even the secrets, the concealed things, of men will be judged (Rom 2:16). Don’t let the secret sin style separate your heart from God.
Some people choose the SLOTHFUL sin style. This last category represents all the good that has been left undone. Whether it stems from laziness or stubbornness, men and women are shirking their God-given responsibilities! Some say, “I’m not doing anything evil. I’m just not doing good.” The Bible says, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” (Jam 4:17). Mankind has a reckless way of excusing themselves from Biblical mandates. We want all the blessings and none of the responsibilities, but God has cleansed us so that we can get to work (Eph 2:10; Tit 2:14). He who has “all authority” has given marching orders to us all (Matthew 28:18-20). Don’t let the slothful sin style keep you from the Lord’s work. Let us resolve to put off the three styles of sin.
