Christ, The One and Only

It can be difficult to accurately express the uniqueness of Christ. Our Lord remains, in many respects, in a category of one. As the true Messiah, Jesus is the one promised, anointed, and chosen of God. He is the Word which was in the beginning and is God (John 1:1). His uniqueness should really come as no surprise to us, considering Jesus is simultaneously the Son of God and the Son of Man (Luke 22:66-71). As we continue to grow in our spiritual knowledge, we will reach a greater appreciation for what this unique position allows the one and only Christ to provide for mankind.

First, consider how Christ is the one and only mediator. Before the foundation of the world, God knew mankind would need an intercessor, due to our sinfulness (Ephesians 1:4; Isaiah 59:15-16). Just as Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, the Son of Man was lifted up, so that whoever believes and obeys Him would have eternal life (John 3:14-15; Numbers 21). As Immanuel, Christ took the form of a servant, lived out sinless obedience, and gave himself a ransom for all (Matthew 1:23; Philippians 2:5-8; 1 Timothy 2:5-6). Who else could effectively bridge the gap between a holy God and a sinful people?

Second, we find that Christ is the one and only source of truth. Being moved with compassion, Jesus provides spiritual knowledge to mankind (Mark 6:34). We come to Him, needing the milk and meat of the Word (1 Peter 2:1-3; Hebrews 5:12-14). The words He brings are from the Father, and we must abide by them (John 14:23-24; 15:10). They are words of everlasting life that sanctify us and build our faith (John 4:13-14; 17:17; Romans 10:17). The Lord can be our only spiritual nourishment because He is the only source of eternal truth (John 1:17; 6:35, 67-68). Who else could we look to and find the words of life?

Third, notice how Christ is the one and only foundation. Buildings need solid foundations. Similarly, our physical and spiritual lives need some underlying support. Too often mankind builds their lives on the shifting sands of worldliness (Matthew 7:26-27; James 4:4). If our support system is rooted in materialism, then we should not hope for eternal life. Personal power, influence, position, and human wisdom will all fail us as well. Our lives need to be founded on the solid rock, the Messiah (Psalm 61:2; 62:6). He is the foundation which God has laid for us and no other proper foundation can be laid (1 Corinthians 3:11). Not only that, Jesus is the chief cornerstone, the most important and precious stone (Isaiah 28:16; Romans 9:33; 1 Peter 2:6-8). Who else could fill this role at the base and the center of the structure of our lives?

Finally, we know that Christ is the one and only savior. The most important question to answer is the one relating to our eternal souls. What can wash away our sins? We will find forgiveness is in nothing but the blood of Jesus (Matthew 26:28; Ephesians 1:7). He alone is the promised deliverer (Luke 2:11; Romans 11:26-27). Only through Him can we be delivered from the power of darkness and added into God’s Kingdom of Light (Colossians 1:12-14; Acts 2:47). Under all heaven there is no other name for men to call upon to save them (Acts 4:12). Our salvation can only come from God. He is our rock and our salvation (Psalm 62:1-2). God has designed only one way for us to come to Him. The Lord Christ is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Who else could we trust to deliver us from the bondage of sin?
